Devil's Advocate

My research paper is going to focus on immoral  corruptions that cigarettes have on their advertising today. I originally wanted to focus on wrongful advertising tactics in it's entirety, however I realized that a topic such as that is too broad to cover in a paper the size of mine. So now I've narrowed down my research and have decided to focus on cigarette companies only. I think the potential weakness of my paper would be that there are so many important facts on the negative effects of cigarette's use in advertising and i want to be able to touch on the three most important fact. I feel that after doing some research on this topic the subject matter is still overly broad and hard to cover in one short paper. Thus my way to overcome this problem is to touch of the facts that matter most to me as a person. That way I can focus on specific areas of marketing cigarettes which effect me as a person as apposed to advertising effects on society as a whole. This way I will be able to focus my paper with stronger conviction from a personal perspective.

Movie Review - Battleship

I was hoping to try and make a positive movie review for films released in 2012, however it doesn't seem that there are very many good movies released this year, or for that matter, I haven't seen a really good flick in what seems like several years. So instead i'm going the other route and making a negative movie review on a movie that i thought was quite a disappointment. The all so gloriously over hyped movie Battleship takes the cake for my biggest movie let down of 2012. Of course I was a skeptic as to how they were going to take what is a mildly entertaining Hasbro game and turn it into an action movie with alien enemies. I still went into the movie with high hopes. However once you begin to watch the film you begin to realize that the cheesy Hollywood performances begin to outweigh any redeeming quality's that the special effects might have on the film. I felt that the lead characters were lacking substance through out the movie. Rihanna's film debut lacked performance as a cliche tomboy militant woman. I also felt that the sinking ships were a reminder of Liam Neeson's career which is going in the same direction if he continues making movies like this. Finally to top it all of the movie was just filled with over the top in your face American patriotism, enough to make a man sick. So to sum it all up after watching the movie I would have to say that Battleship was Battleshit (excuse the language). It hasn't been a great year for movies in my opinion, however i'm still waiting on Quentin Tarantino's Django Unchained to be my saving grace.

Blog Post #1 - Topic Selection

   Today I am going to discuss what I have selected as the topic for my research paper due later in the school year. Choosing a research topic is never easy especially when it seems like you've covered every topic that interests you from research papers in the past. However after hours of hard deliberation and soul searching along with some Internet searching I've finally found something to spark my interest enough to write a thousand plus words on it.
   Advertising is the topic I will be concentrating my research topic on. I want to focus on the morality of certain advertisement strategies and decide if some ads are so immoral (ie. cigarettes, alcohol, drugs, etc.), that they should be banned. I want to focus on this topic because I want to decide for myself if advertising companies have gone to far. I also want to see if there is any correlation between advertising and corruption in the society we live in today.
   The reason I feel that this topic is important is because it's a topic that interests me. The say what separates a good paper from a bad paper is difference between having to say something and having something to say. I believe that with this topic I actually have something to say by focusing on a topic that deals with marketing and being a business student I feel that marketing is an area of applied interest for me to begin my research on.
